this is one of the worst controlling characters i've ever layed my hands on, and yet i'm really fond of the game. it has an old-school design sensibility in near every aspect of the game design, and its satisfying learning to handle the character. the design feels very intentional in how it works and what parts are more painful. I stayed up playing it way too late to actually beat it.
monsters are tanky, but i think it works especially when the doors themselves are very satisfying to pop in one hit. learning that jumping increases your fire rate really helped.
I appreciate the 3d platforms, they feel like something out of the SNES era when people were playing with various new graphical techniques. pixel art in general is incredibly good.
I do wish there was a bit more consistency in the time between a door opening and it spawning a monster (ideally, making it more like the longer times), especially since the movement is so committal. I had to redo the second to last level because i walked too far to the right and fell off the edge of the platform after beating it.
the music is great, especially the last theme.
